A steam cleaner can be useful for certain cleaning jobs around the home. Because it uses heat and moisture, though, it is important to check both the surface and the machine before you begin.

Read the Surface Care Instructions

Start with the cleaning instructions for the surface you plan to treat. Some materials can be damaged by heat or moisture. Be especially careful with unsealed wood, delicate finishes, and surfaces with loose or damaged grout. If you are unsure whether steam cleaning is suitable, ask the surface manufacturer.

Choose the Right Attachment

Steam cleaners may come with different brushes, nozzles, or cloth covers. Select an attachment made for the task and follow the cleaner’s instructions. A brush that works well on a durable surface could scratch a delicate one.

Test a Small Area

Try the cleaner in an inconspicuous spot first. Let the area cool and dry, then check for changes in color, finish, or texture before continuing.

Work in Small Sections

Move steadily and avoid holding the steam in one place longer than the manufacturer recommends. Wipe away loosened dirt with a suitable cloth as you go. Steam can help loosen buildup, but some jobs may still need gentle wiping or another cleaning method.
